Dr Yikun Wang is a Senior Research Fellow within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton. She is also working part time in Lloyd’s Register as an Industrial Fellow.

She is an invited member of the International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress Committee III.1 Ultimate Strength for the 2018 – 2021 period.  

Yikun obtained her BSc degree in Dalian University of Technology, China, in Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering in 2010. She then undertook her MSc studies in the University of Southampton and obtained a degree with Distinction in Maritime Engineering Science/Naval Architecture in January 2012. Her MSc project led to a research paper, based on which she was awarded the WHC Nicholas Prize in 2018 by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects for the best paper by an author under the age of 30. Subsequently she carried out her PhD research based at the National Centre for Advanced Tribology at Southampton and Fluid Structural Interactions Research Group in the University of Southampton, and obtained her PhD degree in June 2015.  Yikun started her career in academia as a Research Fellow at the University of Southampton in July 2015 and became a Senior Research Fellow in January 2019.

Research interests

Yikun’s research is focused on life cycle and material degradations of marine structures, particularly the interactions between mechanical performances and electrochemical/corrosion behaviour.
