If you are interested in becoming a pilot, I suggest you join the local air cadet group. You will be able to have a go at flying light aircraft and gliders.

What do you do?

I fly Airbus aircraft from London Heathrow to various destinations in Europe, Russia and North Africa.

What's the best part of your job?

The view from the flight deck, the satisfaction of smoothly landing a 70 tonne aircraft and the thrill of the power on takeoff.

Why did you go into this career?

I have always been interested in aircraft since going to airshows as a child. I wanted to be a pilot from the age of 12. It is a job which is far from boring, every day is very different from the last. Of course there are also the stunning views from the windows, which I feel privileged to see.

What is your education/experience:

Up to age of 16: GCSEs in a range of subjects at my local comprehensive school. After 16: A levels in maths, physics, business studies. BEng Aeronautics and Astronautics Southampton University.

Any advice on getting the first job?

I applied while at University for the British Airways trainee pilot scheme. The training course lasts around 18 months.

What is your advice to potential students?

If you are interested in becoming a pilot, I suggest you join the local air cadet group. You will be able to have a go at flying light aircraft and gliders. Also you have the chance to do a number of other activities such as camping, shooting, hiking, etc.

What are your hobbies?

Sailing, mountain biking, swimming.
