Hi, I'm Hieu Le and I studied MEng Ship Science 2013 within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton.

For Hieu, he was first attracted to his course because of its world class reputation and the high level of support the University offered overseas students.

I chose to study MEng Ship Science, which taught me problem solving and critical thinking. And outside of my degree, I also took advantage of free lessons to develop my English and French language skills and to master Excel and AutoCAD.

Before coming to the UK from Vietnam, I was very nervous about living in another country. However I was impressed with the effort the University put into helping me settle. I received a lot of helpful information before I arrived and in my first week, my personal tutor helped take me through the University’s systems. I also joined the Vietnamese society, helping me benefit from the experience of other students from my homeland.

I also took initiative to participate in workshops and competitions, which led to me winning a prestigious Engineering Leadership Advanced Award from the Royal Academy of Engineering.  I believe this achievement, combined with the help I received from the University’s careers service, was instrumental in helping me secure two summer internships. The first was with BP in 2011, the second, in 2012, was with London Offshore in Singapore who offered me a full-time position after I graduated.
