At exam times you have to fight for places in the library. I found that lecturers were usually around if you needed them and resources were also never in short supply (thank you late night computer labs!) Some people did take a more novel approach to studying - such as Starbucks, but I found that spending some time in the Union cafe made a good change from the above locations!

What did you enjoy about the course?
The topics covered during the course were varied, challenging and above all interesting. Some topics were completely new - for example materials – whilst others were quite involving, such as the renewable energy lectures. I found hydraulics to be one of the most challenging courses - and to this day remains my lowest scoring topic, but definitely one of the most interesting!

What’s Southampton like as a place to study?

Tell us about your current job
I joined Faber Maunsell because of the potential of the job. It is a multidisciplinary engineering company part of a global family of firms (AECOM). I’m currently working at the Altrincham (Manchester) office as part of the structures team in the Transportation department. This primarily encompasses bridges and other highway structures. My first project in the firm was on the Manchester Metrolink extension project - the largest rail project outside of the London area.

How did our course help you in your current role?
Luckily, one of the last courses I did at Uni was on pre-stressed concrete. Imagine my relief then when in my first week I was asked to do some preliminary calculations for a prestressed bridge deck!

What advice would you give to a student starting out on a Civil/Environmental Engineering degree at Southampton?
Pay attention in your first year! The material that is covered actually becomes the bases of your degree. I found this out, the painful way, in my third and forth years!

Why did you choose Civil Engineering at Southampton?
I kind of stumbled into Civil Engineering; at the last minute I erased mechanical and typed civil on my UCAS form... and here I am! I visited several universities - but Southampton is the only one I found to have an ‘enclosed’ campus, sufficiently secluded to feel like a separate community. It was also significantly greener than most of the places I’d visited.
