Hi, I'm Kate Gill and I studied BEng Aeronautics/Astro within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton.

Engineering is all about practical challenges and solving problems, which I felt was a worthwhile career choice. When you choose a uni course, do it because you are interested in the subject because you will be spending a lot of time thinking about it.

What do you do?

In my first job I moved around various departments on a technical apprenticeship so I could get a feel for the whole company and the bits that I enjoyed. At the end of my first year after graduating, I then had to choose a department and stay there. I chose the Weapons Management Department specialising in certification of air-launched weapons.

What's the best part of your job?

No day is ever the same – and you are always being presented with new challenges. In my current job with Dstl, I am surrounded by engineers and scientists from all backgrounds. Our different backgrounds make an interesting mix in solving defence problems that affect frontline troops, and the decisions we make are clearly visible in making a difference in real life.

Why did you go into this career?

Engineering is all about practical challenges and solving problems, which I felt was a worthwhile career choice. Since graduation, I have always been involved in engineering, from aircraft to weapons to ships and finally to systems engineering of multitude defence systems, which is what I do today.

What is your education/experience:

Up to age of 16: Standard primary and standard 'all girls' secondary, Presdales School, Ware; 10 O levels (yes I am that old). After 16: Four A levels, BEng degree at University of Southampton and then MBA at Southampton Management School.

Any advice on getting the first job?

I was sponsored before and after university by BAE Systems. Before starting my undergraduate degree, I spent a year working at BAE Systems in Warton, Lancashire. I then worked during the summer vacations in my three years of study.

What is your advice to potential students?

When you choose a uni course, do it because you are interested in the subject because you will be spending a lot of time thinking about it.

What are your hobbies?

Walking, camping, anything outdoor, swimming.
