Lucy Marum MEnvSci Environmental Sciences
PhD Researcher in Carbon Sequestration and Grazing
Hi, I'm Lucy Marum and I studied MEnvSci Environmental Sciences within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton.
For my dissertation I investigated the relationship between large herbivore grazing and heathland vegetation, and the impact this had on reptile distribution and abundance.
At Southampton
I followed the Sustainable Environmental Management pathway, focusing my third year project on the impact of grazing management on vegetation on the Lulworth Estate in Dorset. Following this, I completed my month-long work placement with the Ranger Service there, gaining valuable hands-on experience in the field (and living in a tent for the duration!). For my dissertation I investigated the relationship between large herbivore grazing and heathland vegetation, and the impact this had on reptile distribution and abundance.
My Career So Far
Before graduating I secured a trainee position as an editor with Future Science Group Ltd, a publishing company based in London. I was promoted to the role of Commissioning Editor within a year, helping to head the expanding environmental portfolio at the company. I decided I would prefer be involved in the research that went into these journals, and applied to do a PhD at the University of Aberdeen, where I am now researching into how grazing by beef cattle and sheep influences the carbon storage in soils.
