Get involved in as many clubs and societies as possible. University provides unlimited opportunities to meet new people and try new activities and I found the best way to do this was through societies.

Why did you choose Civil Engineering at Southampton?
I chose Southampton University and the School of Civil Engineering and the Environment for many reasons, mainly because I wanted a University that had an excellent reputation that I would be happy at. The staff are very friendly and are extremely happy to help with any queries both inside and outside of lectures.

What did you enjoy about the course?
I enjoyed all of the course as it is maths and science based which were my favourite subjects at school. My favourite part of the course was the residential week in my first year. This was because it was my first opportunity to live with other people on my course. The friendships I made during the week I will have for life.

What's Southampton like as a place to study?
Southampton is an amazing place to study. I really liked the mix of being part of the local community as well as having the University lifestyle. Southampton has excellent sport, shopping and leisure facilities that make it perfect for student life. The University has its own bus service, Uni-link, which provides good transport connections with the city centre, sports grounds, hospitals and train stations.

Tell us about your current job
I am an Officer Cadet at Sandhurst It is both physically and mentally demanding as the days are extremely long and full-on. Once I have completed at Sandhurst I will have a rewarding and challenging career which will start by having approximately 30 soldiers to manage.

How did our course help you in your current role?
Although my degree content will have limited use in my current job, I found the course helped me to improve all my key practical and academic skills. I am more confident and capable in all aspects due to the broad scope of the degree and it has given me a solid foundation for any job that I undertake in the future.

What advice would you give to a student starting out on a Civil/Environmental Engineering degree at Southampton?
Get involved in as many clubs and societies as possible. University provides unlimited opportunities to meet new people and try new activities and I found the best way to do this was through societies.
