Hi, I'm Steve Maddox and I studied MEng Aerospace Engineering within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton.

After my first visit to Southampton University I knew that that was where I wanted to study. I had heard of the outstanding reputation of engineering at Southampton and the aerospace engineering course offered everything I was looking for.

What do you do?

As a Systems Engineer at SELEX S&AS I get involved in the design and development of a number of future surveillance, targeting and imaging systems for use on military platforms in the air, sea and on land. My role involves overseeing the various engineering disciplines within the project; to ensure that the end product functions correctly and delights the customer.

What's the best part of your job?

I love the fact that I can work on new, world-leading technology every day and play a part in shaping the exciting systems that will be used by our military forces in the future.

Why did you go into this career?

Systems engineering is an ideal role for me because it makes the most of my broad engineering experience and knowledge. The diverse nature of the work prevents me from getting bored quickly and presents me with continuous new challenges. The defence industry is an exciting and fast-paced community with opportunities to work with technology that isn't available commercially.

What is your education/experience:

Up to age of 16: 11 GCSE's and a First Aid Certificate!; After 16: A level mathematics, physics and design and technology MEng Aerospace Engineering (First) at Southampton

Why did you choose Southampton?

After my first visit to Southampton University I knew that that was where I wanted to study. I had heard of the outstanding reputation of engineering at Southampton and the aerospace engineering course offered everything I was looking for.

What was the best part about studying at Southampton?

The best part about studying at Southampton was the chance to meet and make friends with an intelligent, dynamic and like-minded community of people.

What is your advice to potential students?

Be confident, aim high, make the most of opportunities and get involved!
