Placements are an integral part of the MSci/BSc Healthcare Science (Audiology) course. Students spend two or three fortnights on taster placements during their first year (including part of the Easter break) and then 40 weeks on main placements during the second and third years (including Summer and Easter breaks). The placements are guaranteed, organised and overseen by us. The 40 week placements are also available to MSc students as part of the MSc Audiology (with clinical placement) course.

Undergraduate students on the BSc and MSci Healthcare Science (Audiology) course, will 40 weeks of placements during their second and third years.
Postgraduate UK/EU students on the MSc Audiology course also have the opportunity to spend 40 weeks of placement after completely their degree.

In most of the locations we work in we have sole use specialist sound proof rooms. We have fully equipped rooms in each location so we are able to provide a robust Audiology service in the community.
Our patient management system is Auditbase and we use Auricles for hearing aid programming and Audiometry

There are reasonable bus and train links to community clinics. Lifts can also be shared with Audiologists. Travel expenses are reimbursed.
Accommodation available
There is accommodation on site. On some occasions getting accommodation can be difficult but this depends on the cohort of junior doctors. As Torbay is a holiday location there are plenty of bed and breakfast establishments and longer term lets available. We have an information pack which we can provide on request which lists details of accommodation available.

Satelite Clinics
The main base is King Edward VII, but students will be expected to attend clinics at Wexham Park and Upton hospital in Slough, St Marks in Maidenhead, Heatherwood in Ascot and Skimped Hill in Bracknell.
Having access to a car would be most useful, but if you use public transport you will still be expected to travel to the satelite clinics. Hospital transport may be available and you may also be able to share lifts with colleagues.
Please advise the Supervisor before you start if you have access to a car or public transport only.

Satellite Clinics
The main base is Yeovil District Hospital, but students could be expected to attend clinics at Crewkerne Hospital, Wincanton Hospital and South Petherton Hospital. Staff training is essential to ensure that both the placement centre and the student get the most out of their placement. Specific information for staff preparing for placement can be found below.
The one-day training sessions for new Placement Supervisors will be 0930-1630hr on Friday 13th September at the Highfield Campus of the University of Southampton. Please email audplace to register.
A half-day training session on “Introduction to supporting clinical learning”, for junior staff supporting students for the first time, whether it’s PTP, STP, MSc or other, will be on Wednesday 3rd April. 1330-1630hr at the Highfield Campus of the University of Southampton. Bring your own lunch (only drinks provided). Please email us to register.
The mandatory training for existing and new university appointed assessors, by invitation only, will be Wednesday 3 April. 0930-1230hr.
This one-day session will this year be a more general Audiology education update day, including discussion of the new BSc, placement structure for 2019-20 and review of previous year of placements. It will be on Friday 21st June. 0930-1630hr in our Skills Lab, Building 13 (ISVR), Highfield Campus.
