Year 1 Constructionarium 2010 a great success

All of the Year 1 Civil Engineering students attended a very successful Constructionarium event held at the National Construction College, Norfolk, 9-14 May 2010. The students spent the week planning the construction of and building scaled down versions of well known structures such as the Millau Viaduct and 30 St Mary’s Axe, London (better known as the Gherkin). The Constructionarium is held at the end of Year 1 and converts the year’s classroom theory and design into practical construction. The students put into practice and learn construction techniques, health and safety, surveying, teamwork and project and time management.

This year, for the first time on a Southampton Constructionarium, all of the teams completed their structures, including the Millau Viaduct that has proved to be tricky in previous years, and so a very big congratulations to all of Year 1! All four of the project groups finished within half an hour of the midday Friday deadline set, creating a real buzz and excitement on the final day. The full year group are pictured on the finished Gherkin structure.

Many thanks go to Laing O'Rourke, who sponsored and ran the Southampton Constructionarium for the third year running, and provided the huge input of staff and resources required for a successful event. Thanks also go to AECOM, who provided a very helpful resident engineer, and Cemex and PHD Scaffolding, who provided concrete and scaffolding.

The events of the week have been captured on film by Eyewitness Productions, who are now busy editing their footage into a 15 minute film.
