Published: 6 December 2011

University of Southampton, Civil Engineering graduate, Claire Gott has recently been presented the New Civil Engineer (NCE) Graduate of the Year Award.

Claire, now a graduate structural engineer with WSP Group, received her prize and trophy from NCE editor Antony Oliver in front of 190 industry leaders gathered at the ICE.

During her time at the University Claire, along with fellow student Emily Hill, decided they wanted to become involved in an international development project. Following talks with the Mosame Trust the pair gathered a team of like-minded students to form the Cameroon Catalyst project in November 2009.

By August 2010, the Cameroon Catalyst team had designed, funded and constructed the January Hope Community Centre, which was then handed over to the village of Bambouti.

Since 2009 Claire has raised over £90,000 towards infrastructure development in Bambouti and the project continues today with the involvement of a new group of Southampton students.

In an interview with NCE Claire said that she intends to devote her winnings of £1250 to the Cameroon Catalyst project.

She also commented: "I intend to use this fantastic opportunity to promote to our industry the importance of graduate engineers. It is vital that employers realise we remain passionate and committed to our chosen profession especially during such challenging times."
