Simon Kemp

Simon Kemp from the University of Southampton has been appointed the UK Academic Lead on Education for Sustainable Development for the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

Simon will be responsible for providing academic leadership for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), informing practice and strategy between the HEA and academic staff across higher education.

The role requires the development of new educational materials, production of strategy documents, management of the ESD academic on-line community, linking ESD with other academic disciplines and themes, and promoting inter and cross-disciplinary work.  The role will also involve working strategically with key professional, statutory and regulatory bodies.  Overall it is about guiding and raising the profile of ESD in the UK academic community.

Simon, who is Director of Employability and Employer Engagement for Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton, says: "This position will place me at the centre of ESD in the UK, although I am looking to extend the relationships to involve the international academic community.

"There is a vast array of world-leading expertise in sustainability within the University and I would like to help us apply that expertise to the development of solutions to sustainability problems in the local, national and global environment."

Simon is a National Teaching Fellow (NTF), having been awarded the prestigious fellowship from the HEA in recognition of his work in ESD and employability. Since the mid-1990s, Simon has led and contributed to numerous sustainability projects across the University of Southampton, including the University's Green Academy programme, which is working towards placing sustainability within the CORE (Curriculum Operations Research and Experience) of the University.
