Constuctionarium Challenge 2012

Published: 31 May 2012

Year 1 Civil Engineering students successfully completed this year’s Constructionarium Challenge sponsored by Laing O'Rourke.

The Constructuionarium, held at the National Construction College, Norfolk, is a hands-on construction experience for students and young professionals.

The University of Southampton Constructionarium is held at the end of Year 1 and converts the year's classroom theory and design into practice and developing their skills in construction techniques, health and safety, surveying, teamwork and project and time management.

The students spend the week planning the construction of and building scaled down versions of well-known structures such as the Millau Viaduct and 30 St Mary's Axe, London, better known as the Gherkin.

This year, all of the teams completed their structures in the four and a half days available, including the Millau Viaduct structure that has proved to be tricky in previous years.
