Engineering Sciences Lecturer Dr Liudi Jiang has received an award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) UK & Republic of Ireland Section for the best presentation/technology closest to market at a conference at Loughborough University. She delivered a presentation on CNT Composite Surfaces for Electrical Contact Interfaces, which explained the progress of relevant research in the Faculty, which is jointly supervised by Liudi and Professors John McBride and Mark Spearing.

Their project to develop novel switching systems at the micron scale involving carbon nanotubes and gold is funded by Innovative electronics Manufacturing Research Centre (IeMRC). The switches have tremendous potential as they are long-lasting, hard-wearing and reliable with many applications in industry including telecoms.

"My short presentation summarised the promising results so far from the whole team and also tried to demonstrate the strong commercialisation potential with a view to attracting valuable industrial partners. I hope we have helped to raise the prestige of this project as well as Engineering generally at the University of Southampton," says Liudi.
