Ship science graduate honoured with Whitworth medal
Ship Science graduate Simon Mathieson has received his certificate and medal as a Whitworth Scholar from IMechE President Professor Isobel Pollock and Whitworth Society President Gillian Cooke at a ceremony at IMechE headquarters in London.
During his MEng studies at Southampton, Simon was a Whitworth award holder. The Whitworth Society, named after Victorian mechanical engineer Sir Joseph Whitworth, promotes outstanding engineers and engineering in the UK.
Earlier in his career, he was an Engineer Officer at P&O Cruises and a Chief Engineer on three superyachts before he decided to return to study.
"I enrolled on the Ship Science programme because I wanted a new direction in my career," he says. "The degree was challenging but rewarding, I particularly liked the fourth year group project looking at energy efficiency of high-powered ships. I am sure I would not have secured my present job with Lloyds Register without the knowledge and experience I gained at the University of Southampton."
During summer vacations, Simon worked on superyachts and on a placement for London Offshore Consultants.
