National honour for Audiology graduate

Published: 15 January 2013

BSc Audiology graduate Steven Scott has been honoured for his achievements during his placement at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals by the British Academy of Audiologists (BAA), the largest association of professionals in hearing and balance in the UK.

He was presented with the Lisa Bayliss award, which recognises the student who excelled in his/her placement year, at the BAA's annual conference in Manchester. Steven was nominated for the award by his Deputy Head of Department at Basildon Hospital, Ryan O'Shea.

Steven spent three months at Basildon Hospital completing an additional placement after initially spending six months there on placement in his third year. While on placement he gained practical experience of audiology, enhancing his skills and abilities in dealing with patients. "I'd like to say that without all of the help and support from the other Audiologists and administration staff at the department, I wouldn't have won the award" explains Steven.

"I always wanted to work in healthcare but wasn't sure which career to follow," Steven explains. "However, after hearing a talk about the BSc Audiology programme at the University of Southampton by Dr Daniel Rowan who has a real passion for the subject, I felt that Audiology was the right choice for me."

Since graduating from the University of Southampton, Steven has been employed by Chime Social Enterprise (the NHS Audiology Service for NHS Devon - Mid, East and Exeter areas) as a Senior Audiologist.
