Graduates return to share their experience

Published: 20 January 2013

Three recent Environmental Sciences graduates who are making impressive strides in their careers will be returning in the next few months to pass on their expertise to the next generation.

The graduates will be guest lecturers for our Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) module, sharing the latest industry practices and helping students in applying their knowledge to real life situations.

EIA is the process of systematically assessing the potential impacts major developments may have on the environment. 2009 graduates Ed Cremin and Sam Stokes and 2011 graduate Anna Lewis will return to the University providing lectures for the module.

Ed is now a Sustainable Design Consultant with London-based Architects Atelier Ten, providing advice on sustainable design and accreditation of green buildings. Ed will be leading a workshop on sustainable design as part of the module.

After graduation Anna Lewis worked for an ecological consultancy. She now works in the Anglia region for the Environment Agency working on water resources and consulting on planning applications. Anna will be lecturing about her experiences with two different players in the development process.

Sam Stokes now works for estate agents and property consultants Strutt and Parker. One of his main roles is to support the development of large scale solar energy facilities. Sam will lead a workshop about the environmental impacts of renewable energy.

Dr Malcolm Hudson, who coordinates the EIA module, said "this is a regular feature of our teaching at Southampton- our students need to learn the theory but they need to be exposed to the practice as well. Most of our graduates get good jobs in the careers they were hoping for when they first applied, and our students benefit enormously from their expertise."
