Training the next generation of audiologists
Audiology graduate Dr Jenny Loo is putting her skills to good use in Singapore where she leads a team of 17 people at the National University Hospital.
She enrolled at Southampton on the MSc programme in Audiology at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) in 2003 because she was impressed by its combination of courses in both balance and hearing and wanted a good grounding in both subjects in one year.
“Right from the start, it was a great learning environment and the lecturers were very friendly, especially Julie Brinton,” she remembers. “We were a big class with only four international students but everyone mixed well, I enjoyed the project work and the atmosphere was very good. I still keep in contact with some of the friends I met on the course.” While at Southampton, Jenny was awarded the Dr DW Robinson Award for the best dissertation in Human Sciences Research and a distinction for her degree.
Following graduation as a clinical audiologist at Southampton, Jenny worked in Singapore, then received another fellowship grant from the Singapore government (National Medical Research Council) to study for a PhD at University College London, returning home in 2012.
She now combines her duties as team leader of 13 audiologists and five speech therapists at her hospital’s Centre for Hearing Interventions and Language Development with clinical work. Jenny is also involved in setting up a master’s programme at the National University of Singapore to train the country’s next generation of audiologists and would like to thank Professor Mark Lutman at ISVR for inspiring her to continue her studies.
