Supporting hearing dogs to help deaf people

Published: 19 May 2013

Staff and students at the Auditory Implant Service (AIS) at the University of Southampton continue to support the work of the charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

A raffle in Engineering has raised more than £340, which will buy ‘uniforms’ for 100 hearing dogs which help people with hearing impairments.

The next event will be a clothes swop on Wednesday 5 June in building 19 (ISVR) – Ellie, a hearing puppy in training, will be the VIP guest.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is a national charity and centre of excellence. It trains hearing dogs to alert deaf people to important household sounds and danger signals such as the alarm clock, doorbell, telephone and smoke alarm. They provide independence, confidence and valuable companionship.

Since its launch at the Crufts dog show in 1982, hearing dogs have helped 1,600 deaf people in the UK, often transforming their lives. There are currently over 750 working partnerships in the country.
