Praise for outstanding paper on bio-implant research
Dr Chuan Ting Wang, who graduated from Engineering at the University of Southampton in 2013, has been named as the author of one of the top 25 ‘hottest articles’ published in Wear by ScienceDirect in 2012.
He joined the national Centre for Advanced Tribology at Southampton (nCATS) and the University's Material Research Group in 2009 after studying for his undergraduate and masters degrees in material science at Nanjing University of Science & Technology in China.
His PhD project examined how to make a new design of bio-implants out of titanium and resulted in the publication of several academic papers, the first in Wear entitled Effect of grain size on the micro-tribological behavior of pure titanium processed by high-pressure torsion. Chuan Ting used a cold working method of severe plastic deformation to refine the microstructure and enhance the mechanical properties of metals and then study their behaviour when rubbing with other materials. His supervisors were Dr Nong Gao and Professor Terence Langdon from the Materials Research Group at Southampton, both specialists in severe plastic deformation, and Professor Robert Wood from nCATS. Professor Mark Gee from NPL was also involved in the project.
"I am very glad to know that people like our idea and read our papers which gives me faith to continue with this research," he says. "My time at Southampton was very rewarding and I am pleased I can now carry on with this work as a postdoctoral assistant in Professor Langdon's laboratory at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles."
