Civil Engineering students get advice from IStructE President
Civil Engineering students from the University of Southampton were recently given an inspirational talk by Y.K Cheng, the 93rd President of the Institute of Structural Engineers (IStructE).
Y.K spoke to the students about his career from starting University right through to his current position and how structural engineering has changed over his career and where he thinks the industry is headed.
He advised the students that the successful structural engineers of the future would need to be motivated by service, have the skills to work with and understand other people and the ability to make decisions.
Y.K said that "21st century Structural engineers will play substantive roles and contribute to solutions in:
- Improving the predictions for the performance of structures for all aspects of sustainability over their life cycle
- Understanding risks and mitigation against natural and man-made hazards
- Recognizing energy and carbon emissions resulting from building construction and operation.
