Leading politician speaks to Environmental Science students

Published: 26 November 2013

Leader of the Green Party for England and Wales, Natalie Bennett talked about her party’s policies to staff and students at a meeting jointly organised by Environmental Science students and the party.

The Australian, who studied agricultural science at university before becoming a journalist, spoke about her party's support of renewable energy as well as the Greens' pledge to renationalise the railways and improve public transport.

She said she thought the controversial extraction of shale gas known as ‘fracking' would not happen in the UK because of geological factors and the weight of opposition.

Jack Connors from the Environmental Sciences Student Society says the event was a success: "It was great to see a big student presence, as well as a few local people. Natalie's views were all interesting and it was clear that the Green Party have very different ideas from the current big political parties! Her views on the HS2 (High Speed Rail from London to Birmingham) project and how her party believes the UK can meet future energy demands were really interesting - especially the role that communities can play in developing renewable energy schemes."

The Greens gained their first MP in 2010 (Caroline Lucas MP for Brighton Pavilion) and will target ten seats at the general election in 2015.
