Civil Engineering students receive awards for their design work
Congratulations to Sally Pickard and Aiden Brown, Rosie Burchell and Jared Tiller who have won the Part 1 Civil Engineering Design Prize and the Part 1 Civil Engineering Drawing Prize respectively.
An amended design curriculum has been implemented this academic year with the aim of improving our student's abilities in design. The students have been challenged with resolving a series of design projects ranging in scale, duration and complexity with the application of an effective design process being the central focus.
The main design project required the students to work in pairs and to design and make a prototype structure that uniquely responded to a designated site and an action word (Ascend, Descend, Traverse, Lookout). They were required to develop and test conceptual ideas in order to realise manufactured prototypes that were presented on site.
"Rosie and Jared's project demonstrated a high degree of resolution, quality of finish and balanced theoretical ideas with the practical site considerations and of manufacture. Sally and Aiden's drawings clearly and accurately communicated the detailed design of their proposal and its relationship to its site. Well done to both." comments Alastair McDonald, Senior Teaching Fellow in Design.
The students are now off to the Constructionarium where they will build large-scale structures within the context of a controlled construction site.
