Southampton’s MEng students are among the best in the country
Three Southampton engineering undergraduates have been successful in national competitions aimed at finding the best UK students in their subjects.
The third years had to tackle online tests, application forms, interviews and assessment exercises as well as write essays on topical subjects to beat hundreds of other students and win through to the finals of the TARGETjobs Undergraduate of the Year Awards with leading employers.
Although the Southampton students did not win the top prizes, they all enjoyed the experience and felt the achievement of being one of just ten finalists in each category would be useful in their careers. Sir Trevor McDonald presented the awards on the night at Canary Wharf and spoke about the importance of achieving success through education.
- MEng Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering student Filippo Massarelli reached the final of the EON Engineering award after writing about sustainable energy. For him, the highlight of the process was the assessment centre at the company's power station at Ratcliffe-on-Soar.
- MEng Civil Engineering student William Hooper was a finalist of the Laing O'Rourke Construction, Engineering and Design award. In one of his essays, he chose to write about the considerable challenges of building the Panama Canal.
- MEng Civil and Environmental Engineering student Anthony Morris reached the final of the EDF Energy Low Carbon undergraduate of the year award and said he valued the opportunity to network with leading industry leaders in sustainable energy.
