A series of global research projects including scientists from the University of Southampton will study the relationship between humans and their environment in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Professor Robert Nicholls, from the School of Engineering, is contributing to one of eight multi-disciplinary projects that have collectively secured £4.3 million in funding to help find comprehensive solutions to global challenges.

The Southampton research, which will work with Sweden’s Stockholm University and Jadavpur University in India, will study opportunities and trade-offs between SDGs for food, welfare and the environment in deltas.

Scientists will use the Ganga delta in West Bengal, India, as a case study, drawing upon data from the recent Deltas, Vulnerability and Climate Change: Migration and Adaption (DECCMA) research project.
