Researchers from around the globe will design infrastructure that can meet the demands of the modern world in a new National Infrastructure Laboratory at the University of Southampton.

The major facility on Boldrewood Innovation Campus was officially opened on Friday 27 September by Network Rail chief executive Andrew Haines.

The National Infrastructure Laboratory will form part of the UK Collaboratorium for Research on Infrastructure and Cities (UKCRIC) and represents an investment of £48m including funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Department for Business, Energy and Industry Strategy (BEIS), the University of Southampton and project partners.

International research programmes will utilise cutting-edge research facilities on the site, including a Large Structures Testing Laboratory with a 4m deep reinforced concrete floor and 6m diameter geotechnical centrifuge.
