Southampton placed in top 50 Best Global Universities for Mechanical Engineering

The University of Southampton has been placed 44th for Mechanical Engineering in the 2020 Best Global Universities rankings published by US News & World Report.

The influential international guide, which measures academic research performance as well as global and regional reputation, ranks the University third in the UK and seventh in Europe for the subject area.

The 2020 Best Global Universities rankings feature 1,500 universities across 81 countries, with Southampton securing 10 subjects in the world’s top 100 to achieve a 94th place overall.

For General Engineering, which includes the Aerospace, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical disciplines, the University was ranked joint 95th in the world and seventh in the UK.

Professor David Richards, Head of Engineering, said: “I am very pleased that the School of Engineering continues to be judged as world-leading in these significant global rankings. It is a measure of success that reflects the dedication of our staff to expanding our international academic research and reputation.

“Our Mechanical Engineering courses provide students with the fundamentals of engineering and skills to launch successful careers and I’m delighted to see the Department placed so highly. My congratulations to all colleagues who have contributed to this achievement.”

In two of the rankings’ key indicators, Mechanical Engineering at Southampton was ranked 11th for the percentage of total publications with international collaboration and 37th for the number of papers that are among the top one percent most cited.

Mechanical and General Engineering represent two of five subject areas within the University’s Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences to have achieved top 100 rankings in the global guide. Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Physics and Computer Science were placed 52nd, 62nd and 91st respectively.
