Global experts join forces to meet accelerating demand for prosthetics and orthotics
Dozens of highly-skilled engineers are being trained to address the global demand for prosthetics and orthotics through a new national centre of excellence involving the University of Southampton.
The Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Prosthetics and Orthotics, based at the University of Salford, has secured £11 million in UK government funding for the engineering of artificial limbs, braces, footwear and other devices which help people recover from injury.
Professor Liudi Jiang, Southampton Engineering lead for the CDT, says the Centre’s “rich combination of research, development and training” will be key to supporting the millions of people who depend on devices to achieve improved quality of life.
In addition to four-year doctoral research training, Southampton and its collaborators are offering a new master’s programme operating across all four partner universities.
