Event details

Demonstrations of the scientific principles that determine how certain instruments produce sound.

As part of National Science and Engineering Week Matthew Wright, Senior Lecturer in Acoustics at the University's world-renowned Institute of Sound and Vibration Research introduces an evening of clavichord, harpsichord and piano performances by distinguished students from the University's music department. Works by Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, Kern, Moeran and Messiaen are set in counterpoint to explanations and demonstrations of the scientific principles that determine how those instruments produce the sound they do, from the point where the hammer meets the string to the inner ear of you, the audience, and beyond. No previous scientific knowledge will be necessary, just a love of music and an enquiring mind.
