Seminar series

The River Murray is Australia’s largest river, draining an area of 1 million square kilometres. It discharges to the sea through an opening that is located in an area of significant environmental importance and one that has provided plenty of challenges due to a combination of variable river flows, a highly energetic ocean, and a tendency to become choked with ocean beach sand.

Dr Walker has been working in the area since the late 1980s in an effort to understand the dynamics of the mouth and to apply this knowledge in developing an effective management strategy.

The talk will cover Dr Walker’s early work on developing a statistical model of the mouth behaviour and move to the more recent process-based modelling that is designed to optimise the operation of dredges that have been brought in to assist in managing the the extensive sand banks that have formed over the last thirty years.
