ISVR Engineering Research Seminar

Recordings of speech and audio relating to crimes can come from a wide range of sources including covert recording devices, telephone calls to the emergency services, CCTV footage and mobile telephones. In many cases questions arise such as, who is the person speaking in the recording, is the recording genuine, what is being said, can the sound quality be improved? Forensic analysts are often consulted to answer these questions. This talk will introduce the different types of analyses undertaken and discusses some of the specific techniques used, including newer developments such as automatic speaker identification and analysis of the electric network frequency (ENF) to determine the authenticity of recordings. The talk will be illustrated with examples from real cases.
