Speaker information
Professor Geoff Gibson , University of Newcastle. Research Director of NewRail and Professor of Composite Materials Engineering. Geoff Gibson holds the Roland Cookson Chair. He runs the Centre for Composite Materials Engineering, which specialises in several aspects of the fabrication and use of composites, including marine and offshore applications, pipework, thermoplastic composites, environmental behaviour and the behaviour of composite structures in fire. Research in this area is sponsored by EPSRC, DTI, EU and directly by industry. Geoff Gibson is also Research Director of NewRail, which is a Research Centre devoted to of all forms of technology involved with transport. NewRail is heavily involved in the use of composites and other lghtweight materials to improve the sustainability of modes of transport. Most recently, NewRail has become the Lead Partner in the EU-sponsored FIRE-RESIST programme, which is aimed at promoting a step-change improvement in the fire behaviour of lightweihgt materials used in transport.
