Abstract:

Innovations in technology and operational interventions that can reduce the carbon intensity (gCO2/tenm) of the shipping industry are necessary for the industry to achieve carbon emissions reductions. GloTraM is a model developed during the project "Low Carbon Shipping" for exploring a number of future scenarios for the industry and the potential for take-up of different fuels, technologies and operational practices. This talk provides a brief overview of the modelling approach and the data used in GloTraM. To explain the approach by example, the talk will provide a particular focus on wind-assistance technologies (e.g. flettner rotors, wingsails, softsails), the derivation of the cost-benefit of the technology and some results demonstrating how their future potential can be evaluated.

Dr Tristain Smith , University College London. Dr Tristan Smith, Lecturer in Energy and Transport has, since 2010, grown a substantial shipping focused energy and GHG emissions research group (5 Post-Doctoral Research Associates, 7 PhD students) at UCL-Energy. He is coordinator for £1.6m Research Councils UK and industry funded project Low Carbon Shipping, and Director of £3.5m Research Councils UK and industry funded project Shipping in Changing Climates. He is Principal Investigator on the £1.3m Energy Technologies Institute Heavy Duty Vehicle marine programme, producing models for the analysis of the UK shipping related CO2 emissions, and projections of technology uptake for the UK and global fleets. The group maintains a number of techno-economic models including GloTraM (Global Transport Model), which is used by a number of companies to explore shipping's future scenarios and technology evolution. The group's work has been presented at the IMO GHG Expert group, IMO MEPC, ECCP stakeholder groups, UNFCCC COP side-events, and a number of shipping industry centric events.
