Hosting performances by the world’s greatest artists, the Royal Albert Hall is the busiest and among the most iconic concert venues on the planet. From rock and pop through to classical music, corporate dinners to Cirque du Soleil, the BBC Proms to the ATP Champions Tours, there is no other venue quite like it.
For all its history and prestige, achieving high quality audio reproduction and reinforcement has long been a challenge in the Royal Albert Hall. The Hall’s design and construction predate the modern field of architectural acoustics by nearly half a century, resulting in a unique building that stands apart from many more recent concert halls. Beginning in 2017 the RAH undertook a process to revolutionise the audio experience for audiences, culminating in the Hall’s first ever permanent audio system installation. Deploying 465 loudspeakers from German manufacturer d&b audiotechnik, and harnessing the very latest in cutting edge audio technologies, this is the largest single room loudspeaker installation in the world and has been shortlisted for multiple awards including the AV Awards 2019 (Venue of the Year) and the Event Technology Awards 2019 (Best Venue Installation, Best Technology Partnership).
In this session Patrick Smith, senior project manager for SFL Group (principal contractor on the installation), explores how a multi-disciplinary team of acousticians, system designers and engineers delivered this ground breaking project and redefined audio quality for the Royal Albert Hall.
