Camera-based deformation measurements (CBDMs) are spreading fast in the field of material and structural testing. Techniques like Digital Image Correlation (DIC) are now commercially available (see for instance www.matchid.eu) and gradually, new test protocols are established to take advantage of the tens or hundreds of thousands of data points obtained each time images are captured. However, this technology has not been as readily adopted in the community of structural vibrations. One of the reasons is the fact that the deformations are generally small and DIC can sometimes struggle to deliver enough sensitivity, the other is that high-speed cameras have long been too limited in performance or too expensive to make this technology feasible for structural vibration measurements. Maybe a third factor was the focus of the structural vibration community on time/frequency rather than space and this new technology challenges the established testing techniques.

With the spectacular progress of high speed cameras both in terms of performance and affordability (visit for instance ultra-high-speed-camera), CBDMs are gradually starting to penetrate the community of structural vibrations but this is still a budding field. The objective of this talk is to use my long experience of CBDMs to present the existing state of the art in this field, and to examine future potential. The presentation will include examples of an underrated technique called deflectometry, already presented at the last NOVEM conference; the presentation can be consulted ahead of the seminar on www.camfit.fr for attendants prepared to do a bit of homework before the talk.

Speaker information

Fabrice Pierron, is currently Professor of Solid Mechanics at the University of Southampton. He graduated from ENSEM in Nancy, France, in 1989, and received his PhD from Lyon University, France, in 1994. He has held an Assistant Professor post at the Ecole des Mines de Saint-Etienne from 1994 to 1999, and was a Professor at Arts et Métiers ParisTech (Châlons-en-Champagne, France) before moving to his current position in Southampton in May 2012. He is an expert in the integration of camera-based deformation measurements with inverse methodologies for material mechanical parameter identification. In particular, he has been instrumental in the development of the Virtual Fields Method. Prof. Pierron has published over 130 ISI referenced journal papers and co-authored more than 350 conference communications, with a present h-index of 42. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of Strain (Wiley) and previously Associate Editor of Experimental Mechanics (Springer). He has held a Wolfson Research Merit Award from the Royal Society (2012-2017), an Established Career Fellowship from EPSRC (2014-2019) and is a Fellow of the Society for Experimental Mechanics. He is a cofounder of the MatchID company marketing an innovative Digital Image Correlation software platform integrating mechanical post-processing tools for material identification and finite element model validation.
