HABC Seminar - “You’re putting WHAT in my head?”: Understanding cochlear implant electrode arrays and how to improve them

Abstract
Cochlear implants (CI) are able to provide access to the world of sound and hearing to hundreds and thousands of people world-wide. A key element of a CI is the “electrode array”, a tightly packed group of separate small stimulating electrodes which each stimulate a different region of the hearing system. Although these have been proven to be generally safe and effective over many decades, ongoing evaluation and research is needed in order to ensure innovations and improvements for improved hearing outcomes.  Researchers and clinicians have a key role to play in this process.  In my talk I will review a few main methods used to assess safety and effectiveness of cochlear implant electrode arrays employed at the University of Southampton and elsewhere, including the challenges of large-scale data analysis, new ways to assess adverse events, and new approaches to understanding the biological interface between the electrode and the cochlea.
