ISVR Research seminar

Underwater radiated nose is an important element in the anti-submarine warfare. It is crucial that the Royal Navy can detect any threats before being detected. Thus, the MoD has spent significant amount of effort to ensure the Royal Navy’s platforms are quiet to have an operation advantage over the threats. The threats have also been improving their underwater radiated noise signatures. Thus, there is a constant need to improve our understanding of all noise generating mechanisms and to develop techniques to reduce their radiated noise levels.

This presentation explains the role of Dstl and some of the recent propulsor noise research projects.

"I was awarded a PhD in 1984 by the University of Southampton, employed as a Research Assistant at the Department of Mechanical Engineering on a tracking system project funded by the Admiralty Surface Weapon Establishment. I then joined ISVR as a Research Fellow working on the noise and vibration projects funded by the Admiralty Marine Technology Establishment. I left the University in 1988 to join the then Admiralty Research Establishment. I have gone through all the re-structuring of the MoD research establishments: ARE, DRA, DERA and QineitQ/Dstl split. I was with QinetiQ in the split and joined Dstl in 2005. During the time with the MoD, I have been working on the modelling and control of underwater radiated noise from Royal Navy’s platforms."
