Water shortage is one of the main problems faced by big centres, which can be even more affected by climate change. Hence, reducing water wastage in water distribution systems plays an important role in this scenario. Vibro-acoustic techniques are generally used to detect and locate leaks in such water distribution systems. This is because the presence of a leak is responsible for inducing a coupled fluid-structure type vibration used for its detection. Hence, structural and fluid measurements can be carried out together with signal processing procedures to pinpoint the leak position. However, the instrumentation and signal processing procedures can be enhanced if the physics behind this problem is known beforehand. This starts with basic concepts of wave propagation (physical model) and frequency domain analysis (signal processing). Moreover, this can provide very useful information that aid in the selection of sensors and data acquisition systems reducing the instrumentation cost, and also as a guide to extrapolate for the concepts of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Smart City applications. Therefore, this seminar aims to cover basic concepts up to new trends in water leak detection using actual situations where a group of collaborators has been investigating for the past years.

Dr Fabricio Cesar Lobato de Almeida, São Paulo State University. Dr Fabricio C.L. Almeida is an Assistant Professor at UNESP (São Paulo State University), a post he has held since 2015. He graduated from UNESP with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2006 before taking his PhD in Noise and Vibration Engineering at the University of Southampton, under the supervision of Prof. P.F. Joseph and M.J. Brennan in ISVR (Institute of Sound and Vibration) on problems involving leak detection in buried water plastic pipes. Hence, Dr Almeida has 12 years of experience concerning leak detection in water distribution pipes via using vibroacoustic techniques, and more recently, he has also been carrying out studies on Magneto-Rheological Elastomers (MRE) as a tuneable strategy to attenuate vibration in mechanical systems and image signal processing techniques to detect malfunctions in water spray nozzles. Besides, he has been working in partnership with colleagues and SABESP, the main water company in Latin America, conducting projects focused on the development of new technologies and prototypes for leak detection in water distribution systems, such as the first leak noise correlator entirely build in Brazil. He has published several international journal and conference papers together with some patents.
