Hi, I'm Jian Jiu and I studied Material characterisation modelling of fatigue initiation of aluminium materials within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton.

I will never regret choosing the University of Southampton. It is not only because of its academic reputation, but also the support offered to postgraduate students and the friendly environment for research.

After my undergraduate study in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics department in Peking University, I decided to go abroad to receive further research training in this area. Among all the possible postgraduate opportunities, the University of Southampton provided me a special industry funded project that interested me a lot. People are always making decisions in their life. One day I may regret my idea to go abroad but will never regret choosing the University of Southampton. It is not only because of its academic reputation, but also the support offered to postgraduate students and the friendly environment for research.

Apart from gaining knowledge in my research area, I received a lot of training in how to carry out research and developed confidence in my abilities, eg giving presentations. The study in Engineering Materials Research Group has now become one of the most important memories in my life. Looking back those days, I felt extremely lucky to meet my PhD supervisors Professor Philippa Reed and Dr Stavros Syngellakis at Southampton and the help and support they gave me during my study.

About Jian

Jian obtained his BS degree from Peking University, Beijing, before he joined Engineering Materials Research Group, University of Southampton, as a full-time postgraduate student. His research work was focusing on material characterisation modelling of fatigue initiation of aluminium materials, which was fully funded by Dana Glacier Vandervell Bearings (UK) and Engineering Sciences at the University of Southampton. Jian is now employed as a Technical Analyst for Wellstream International Limited (UK).
