Hi, I'm Stuart Malaure and I studied MSc in Civil Engineering (Pathway for Civil Engineering graduates, 20 month programme with Industrial Placement) within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton.

As part of my MSc in Civil Engineering, I secured an industrial placement with the Environment Agency. I wanted to learn more about the relationship between civil engineering and the environment as I find the subject interesting and relevant to social needs.

I took a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering at Portsmouth Polytechnic and graduated in 1990. I then went on to work for Taylor Woodrow Construction Ltd as an Assistant Civil Engineer for four years. I enjoyed the work, but unfortunately the economic climate for construction in the early 1990s was poor and I was made redundant in 1994. After several jobs I retrained as a primary school teacher and taught around the UK until 2002. After a year’s travelling, I returned to work as a supply teacher. Having enjoyed the work and challenge of civil engineering, I wanted to continue my career in civil engineering and I felt I needed to refresh my knowledge by studying for an MSc and become more up to date with current practices in civil engineering after my prolonged absence. On the recommendation of a friend, I applied to the University of Southampton as it has a good reputation. I was offered a place and was also successful in securing an industrial placement with the Environment Agency. I wanted to learn more about the relationship between civil engineering and the environment as I find the subject interesting and relevant to social needs. In the future I hope to stay with the Environment Agency and become a chartered civil engineer, working on interesting and exciting projects.
