AACE-AFM-01 PhD studentship in Experimental Aerodynamics

This project offers a unique opportunity to develop and utilise advanced experimental methods and examine the physics of turbulent flows relevant to aerodynamic and hydrodynamic applications. You will become a part of a group of highly motivated researchers in the experimental fluid mechanics research laboratory whose efforts are directed towards using state-of-the-art diagnostics to understand the physics of turbulent flows.

The aim of this research project is to explore the structure of turbulent jets by carrying a series of novel experiments. Laser diagnostics ranging from Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) to Tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry (TPIV) will be carried out and the data will be analysed to understand the three-dimensional features of turbulent jets. This will not only us to develop new predictive models for turbulent flows but will also enable us to synthesise active and passive flow control strategies aimed at reducing noise and drag, improving thrust and mixing characteristics in a variety of aerodynamic and hydrodynamic applications.

Applicants should have a keen interest in Fluid Mechanics and possess good analytical skills. An aptitude for experimental research work is desirable. Candidates require (or are expected to gain) a good upper-second or first-class honours degree in a relevant discipline (Engineering, Physics, Mathematics etc).

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Dr Bharathram Ganapathisubramani, Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics Research Group.
