Alireza is not only a highly determined researcher, he is also a dedicated team player. He finished his Master’s degree (MEng) in Biochemical Engineering from University College London in 2018. During his undergraduate degree he has been involved in a variety of disciplines such as whole scale bioprocess design, bioreactor and reaction engineering, biofuel production, microfluidics, cell therapy and regenerative medicine. His interest to peruse research was ignited when he was working on a literature research project on engineering of bone tissue in large scale on microcarriers. His MEng project was surrounding Olfactory Ensheathing cells – a subgroup of neuroglial cells capable of promoting axonal regeneration in the central nervous system. It was during his final year of MEng that he was fascinated by the broad frontier of unanswered questions, which led him to peruse further research in this field. Currently he is working within the bioengineering group under supervision of Dr Dario Carugo and Dr Timothy Millar sponsored by EPSRC. The main goal of his project is to create vein-on-chip devices for disease modelling of varicose veins. He is currently in process of simulating the flow dynamics of the microfluidic systems using ANSYS in order to design an accurate vein model. He is also collaborating with BTFG to evaluate the efficacy of sclerotherapies developed by BTG.
