Mr Daniel Wallace MEng
Postgraduate Research Student

Daniel Wallace is a Postgraduate Research Student at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research and is supported by the Centre for Doctoral Training in Next Generation Computational Modelling.
Dan graduated from the University of Southampton in 2016 with an MEng in Acoustical Engineering, having developed an interest in computational acoustics throughout his undergraduate studies and during industrial placements. Dan's PhD project investigates the constraints and challenges of providing "private sound zones" - areas where one listener can understand a spoken message but others nearby cannot. To achieve this goal, knowledge of signal processing and physical acoustics must be combined with an understanding of how humans perceive speech in different types of noise. Speech privacy control systems like this could be used to transmit speech through glass security partitions, such as those found in banks and post offices, so that others do not overhear any private information, or in vehicles for private hands-free telecommunication.
