Fiona Sunderland is a Postgraduate research student for Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton funded by the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Prosthetics and Orthotics.

Fiona studied her undergraduate in Mathematics at Southampton, earning a first-class BSc (Hons) in 2019. After this she took a sabbatical year working as Vice-President in the Students’ Union. Following this she went on to complete an MSc in Biomedical Engineering at Southampton focusing on Orthopaedic applications, further specialising in lower limb prosthetics for her project under the supervision of Dr Alex Dickinson.

Fiona is part of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Prosthetics and Orthotics, which combines expertise from the University of Salford, Imperial College London, the University of Strathclyde and the University of Southampton, along with more than 25 global industry partners and national facilities, to create a new generation of highly skilled researchers capable of providing a rare combination of clinical, medical and engineering skills that can be applied alongside manufactures and practitioners to accelerate developments within the field.

The subject of her PhD is “Digital Prosthetics: Machine Learning and Human Challenges in Designing and Testing Next-Generation Personalised Limbs” and she will continue to work with Dr Alex Dickinson as her primary supervisor with Drs Cheryl Metcalf and Adam Sobey completing her supervisory team bringing their experience in user led design in prosthetics and Artificial learning/Machine Learning respectively.
