Gareth is a medical microbiologist, working in the multidisciplinary Micro and Nano Therapies (MiNaTher) research team, which operates across the Bioengineering Science and Mechatronics research groups at the University of Southampton. The principal objective of his PhD research is to develop ultrasound-responsive colloidal bubbles, which are capable of transporting biologically active constituents directly to bacterial biofilms in chronic wound infections. The research is supervised by Dr Dario Carugo, Dr Peter Glynne-Jones and Professor Jeremy Webb. The project is funded by EPSRC and benefits from a collaboration with Public Health England.
Gareth completed his BSc (Hons) in 2016, in the interdisciplinary field of Human Biology. He achieved a first for his thesis assessing the effectiveness of novel antimicrobial agents on the destruction of bacterial spores, and was appointed as a member of the Royal Society of Biology. In 2017, he was awarded an MSc with Distinction in Biomedical Science with an advanced specialism in Medical Microbiology; attaining another first for his thesis investigating the anti-virulence activity of conjugated linoleic acid on clinically significant microorganisms.
