Mr Joe Tan BEng, MSc

Joe Tan is a Postgraduate research student within the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, which is part of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

I am currently a postgraduate research student investigating whether broadband novel acoustic wave manipulation, such as negative refraction, can be achieved by designing an engineered structure consisting of array of active subwavelength unit cells, also known as an Active Acoustic Metamaterial. Negative refraction can create novel technologies, such as Acoustic Cloaking and Superlenses.

Before starting this project, I completed my postgraduate degree at University of Sheffield where I graduated with a Distinction in MSc Advanced Control and Systems Engineering in 2017. My research project for this degree was Thrust estimation in Turbofan Engines, which was a research project run within the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre. I have also graduated with a First Class Honours in BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering from Sheffield Hallam University in 2016 where my research project title was Formula Student Concepts: Devising a Design Tool for Designing Engine Blocks.

In my spare time, I play golf and football and I have also ran several marathons for various charities.
