Lawrence Singleton is a Postgraduate research student within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

I am a postgraduate research student investigating the design, optimisation and control of active elastic metamaterials. Active elastic metamaterials offer potentially robust absorption of vibration in the presence of parametric uncertainty while maintaining a small form-factor compared to the wavelength of vibration.

I graduated from the Tonmeister programme at the University of Surrey in 2014, where I also completed a placement year with Adrian James Acoustics Ltd working on a variety of consultancy projects, including the acoustic design of the University of Nottingham George Green library. Following this, I spent 3 years working in AV design and installation in both the professional and high-end residential markets before returning to university. In 2018 I completed an MSc in Acoustical Engineering – Signal Processing here at the University of Southampton, graduating with distinction. As part of this I completed a research project titled “Design of a Low-Cost ‘Invisible’ Distributed-Mode Loudspeaker (DML) with Adaptive Equalisation of the Acoustic Frequency Response”.

In my spare time I enjoy building and riding bicycles.
