Mostafa El Laithy is a postgraduate research student within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Mostafa obtained his BEng degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2016 and his M.Sc degree is Sustainable Energy Technologies in 2017 both from the University of Southampton. During his masters research project, Mostafa worked on investigating the operating conditions leading to white etching cracks in gearbox bearings of wind turbines where he gained an interest in the field of tribology and bearing failure investigations.

Mostafa started his PhD research within the nCATs group in 2018 and is funded by Schaeffler Group. His project is focused on analysing the formation and evolution of subsurface microstructural alterations experienced by bearings due to rolling contact fatigue to develop a better understanding on the material behaviour of bearing steel during operation.

Research interests

Microstructural alterations in steel bearings such as dark etching regions (DER) and white etching bands (WEBs) due to rolling contact fatigue.

Subsurface failure of bearings due to Rolling Contact Fatigue.

PhD Supervision

PhD research on the development of subsurface microstructural alterations known as dark etching regions (DER) and white etching bands (WEBs) in bearing steel due to rolling contact fatigue.

Supervised by Prof. Ling Wang, Dr. Terry J Harvey, Prof. Philippa A.S Reed and Dr. Bernd Vierneusel (Schaeffler).

This project is funded by Schaeffler Group
