If we want to become a cycling nation, better interventions need to be put in place now; Can socio-technical systems approach and cross-modal training help?
Matthew joined the University of Southampton from Loughborough University where he studied Ergonomics (Human Factors) to undertake a PhD in applying socio-technical systems to cycling safety, the main reason that attracted Matthew to the PhD is that he is currently and has been an Elite UK cyclist for 6 years, which meant he had first-hand experience of the vulnerability’s cyclists face when out on the road. After a year he was then offered a research assistants role on another project which aims at applying cross-modal training to both drivers and cyclists. The overall goal of both projects is to identify ways that we can increase safety for cyclists and ultimately continue to increase the participation levels
