Sophia Schillai is a Postgraduate research student for Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton.

During outreach at the Southampton Boat Show, I got to hold a magnetic snail from the hydrothermal vents. I was not only fascinated by the creature, but also reminded how these discoveries are made possible by complex robotic vehicles that can perform precise tasks at such depth. Vehicles that I can contribute to during my degree.

During her BSc in Physics at Ludwig-Maximilians Univerisität München (2011), Sophia decided to follow her interest in robotics by pursuing a BSc in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Technische Universität München (2014). At the AUV 2012 conference in Southampton, she learned about the University of Southampton MSc in Unmanned Vehicle Systems Design (marine) which she went on to complete in 2014.
